Getting to Saarbrücken

  • Traveling to Saarland University by plane: There are several possibilities.

    • The main airport serving Saarbrücken is Frankfurt Airport. It is a big international airport that is easy to reach from many locations. The train from there to Saarbrücken takes about two and a half hours.
    • The airport Frankfurt/Hahn is not in Frankfurt, despite its name, but in the middle of the woods. It mainly serves flights from Europe. There are buses from there to Saarbrücken several times a day.
    • Also in the vicinity: Luxemburg airport and Strasbourg airport.
    • Saarbrücken itself has an airport, but it has planes mainly to and from very few holiday locations, and some connections to Berlin.

  • Directions for traveling to Saarbrücken:

    • Traveling to Saarland University from Frankfurt Airport:

The train from Frankfurt to Saarbrücken takes about two and a half hours.
Frankfurt airport has two train stations: for regional trains (''Regionalbahnhof'') and IC/ICE trains (''Fernbahnhof''). As there are both regional and IC/ICE trains to Saarbrücken, go to whichever train station is closer and use the information terminal there to find out where the next train leaves. These terminals also sell tickets.

    • Traveling to Saarland University by car, by train, or from Saarbrücken airport? See the Saarland University location page.

Traveling within Saarbrücken

You can buy a 3-day ticket (''3-Tages-Karte Stadt'', 9 Euro) for the local buses in the Saarbrücken main train station: Inside the train station, coming from the trains, turn right at the bakery. The tickets are sold in the VGS shop (''Verkehrsverbund''; green and black sign).
Alternatively, you can buy single tickets on the bus.

For timetables of the Saarbrücken buses and trams, please see the page of Saarbahn.
